Update to Sewer-use By-law
Niagara Region is accepting public feedback on a draft Sewer-use By-law. The Sewer-use By-law sets limits for certain substances that may be discharged to Niagara Region's sanitary sewer systems. Enforcement of the by-law protects sewer infrastructure including pipes, pumping stations and wastewater treatment plants.
This draft by-law is intended to replace the current Sewer-use By-law (No. 27-2014). Review of this by-law ensures Niagara Region stays compliant with federal and provincial legislation and, if applicable, city / town's by-laws. Proposed changes are minor and include:
- Updates to clarify and modify rules related to hauling sewage in Niagara. This includes adding the requirements of the Hauled Sewage Policy.
- Adding the ability to appeal a decision of the Commissioner
- Adding requirements for permits to allow certain types of discharges relating to construction dewatering to the sewer system
- Clarifying requirements for laboratory testing
- Clarifying language related to the use of storm sewers
- Amendments to allow a by-law officer to issue compliance orders and to collect information during an inspection
- Updates to language and definitions to improve readability and consistency throughout the document
The draft Sewer-use By-law will be posted online for a 30-day consultation period. Visit the Updates to the Sewer Use By-law No. 27-2014 project page for more information and to provide your feedback.
