Canada Games Park partners are thrilled to announce GFL Environmental as the newest naming sponsor at the new Canada Games Park (CGP). Headquartered in Vaughan, Ontario, GFL Environmental is the fourth largest diversified environmental services company in North America, providing a comprehensive line of solid waste management, liquid waste management, and soil remediation services across Canada and more than half of the U.S. states.
This latest announcement includes a number of naming sponsorships for GFL Environmental including the new internationally-certified outdoor track and field centre, which will now be known as the GFL Environmental International Track and Field Centre. This new state-of-the-art centre consists of a 400m track as well as a grass in-field that offers a wide range of disciplines such as sprint-middle-long distance running, high jump, hurdles and throwing events.
It is one of the finest outdoor track and field centres not only in Canada but also around the world. Following the Niagara 2022 Canada Summer Games, the GFL Environmental International Track and Field Centre will be able to host high-level competitions and championships such as the Pan Am Trials, Olympic Trials and World Championships.
In addition to the track and field centre, one of two ice pads located inside the Walker Sports and Abilities Centre will be now known as the GFL Environmental Arena. This new 200-seat arena is complete with six change rooms and will be used by box lacrosse leagues, hockey leagues and family recreation programming. The ice pad has been constructed below the surrounding floor level so that spectators in wheelchairs can easily watch the action without their view being obstructed by the boards.
Additional GFL Environmental naming sponsorships at CGP include:
GFL Environmental will also act as CPG’s primary waste services provider, managing large-scale waste disposal and recycling needs that support the venue’s sustainability goals.
From Aug. 6 to 21, 2022, the Canada Games will be held in Niagara. The Games are held every two years and are designed to bring together thousands of up-and-coming Canadian athletes who will compete for the right to be a national champion. In support of the Niagara 2022 Canada Summer Games, a new state-of-the-art facility called CGP was built to support the activities of the Games.
CGP is located at the corner of Merrittville Highway and Sir Isaac Brock Way in Thorold, Ontario, and will be the main venue for a majority of the competitions throughout the Niagara 2022 Canada Summer Games, which were delayed by one year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Following the 2022 Games, CGP will be a legacy for the community and provide opportunities for accessible recreation, cultural events and endless activities for decades to come.
Niagara Region, along with the City of St. Catharines, the City of Thorold and Brock University, formed a long-term agreement and a Consortium to manage and operate CGP following the 2022 Canada Summer Games. Additional funding for CGP was provided by Government of Canada and Government of Ontario.
