What being vaccinated against COVID-19 means

For best protection against COVID-19, get vaccinated and stay up to date. Up to date means a person has received all recommended COVID-19 vaccine doses, including any booster dose(s) when eligible.

Protection after a primary COVID-19 vaccine series decreases over time. COVID-19 booster doses help to:

  • Increase protection against symptomatic infection and severe outcomes
  • Reduce transmission

What is considered up to date for COVID-19 will likely change over time based on availability of new vaccines, how much COVID-19 is circulating, and as new evidence on additional booster doses becomes available.

The definition of 'fully vaccinated' may continue in some situations. Currently it's being used for the purposes of self-isolation guidance and proof of vaccination criteria.
