Road Use Permits

Permits are required for any work on or near a Regional road allowance, including construction, access, signage, oversized loads and special events.

Permit application types

  • Construction encroachment: Required for any work to be completed on or below a Regional road allowance, including utility installations, excavations and other construction activities
  • Detours: Required when work not taking place on Regional roads requires a full road closure that diverts or detours traffic onto Regional roads
  • Entrance permits: Required for any private road entranceway, driveway, gate or facility constructed as a means of access to a Regional road
  • Moving oversized or overweight loads: Required for moving an over-dimensional or heavily loaded vehicle on Regional roads, including double-decker buses. An annual permit is available for regular movements within Niagara.
  • Road occupancy: Required for any item that will be installed and remain on a Regional road allowance for a period of time, such as temporary structures, equipment or utilities
  • Sign permits: Required for placing a sign, notice or advertising device within 20 metres of the centreline of a Regional road. The sign must be placed entirely on private property.
  • Special events: Required to use a Regional road for parades, races, festivals or other special events that affect traffic flow
