Future Grimsby GO Train Station

In 2015, Niagara Region partnered with the Town of Grimsby to develop a Secondary Plan which provides a 20-year vision and planning framework to guide transit-supportive development around the new GO station.

The final approved Grimsby GO Transit Station Secondary Plan has been consolidated into the Town of Grimsby's Official Plan as Section 12, including associated schedules 'G' to 'K'.

The Secondary Plan contains policies and guidelines for development or redevelopment which is complimentary to the existing community. The plan also identifies capital infrastructure improvements necessary to provide residents and commuters with safe and efficient access to Grimsby's GO Station.

In 2016, the Province announced the extension of Lakeshore West GO Trains to Niagara with stops in Grimsby, St. Catharines and Niagara Falls.

In December 2018, the Province and Metrolinx moved to a third party delivery model (now called Transit Oriented Communities) for station infrastructure. This means stations (bus loops, station buildings, parking lots, etc.) will now be delivered by third parties - no longer by Metrolinx. The new delivery model:

  • Stopped the Metrolinx-led station work at Grimsby which was already underway
  • Seeks third parties (landowners, developers, municipalities) who could look to deliver GO station requirements to Metrolinx specifications

In November 2019, Metrolinx completed an updated business case for the Niagara GO Train extension. It concluded that the revenue and ridership of the Niagara GO extension would more than offset the initial capital and operating costs of the project.

Niagara Region, Town of Grimsby and Metrolinx remain committed to the site at Casablanca Boulevard / South Service Road, with Niagara Region purchasing 14 acres of land south of and next to the CN rail corridor, across from the Metrolinx-owned property in 2015.

The three parties continue to work together to deliver a GO station within Metrolinx's third party delivery framework, particularly given the exceptional performance in GO Train ridership projected for the Grimsby Station location.

In August 2020, the Town of Grimsby deployed an on-demand transit system in partnership with Niagara Region (NRT OnDemand), enabling riders to move seamlessly to and from the future GO station. This showed a clear commitment to the site and the service, and effective, efficient "first mile, last mile" connections.

NRT OnDemand service has exceeded expectations and has seen exponential growth in Grimsby, providing connections to the Grimsby GO Bus site at Casablanca and growing month over month since its inception.
