Thundering Waters Trunk Sewer Rehabilitation
All Niagara Region projects

About the project

The Thundering Waters Trunk Sewer was built in 1973. It is essential for moving wastewater from the Chippawa and south Niagara Falls areas to the Niagara Falls Wastewater Treatment Plant. This trunk sewer services about 30,000 residents, along with major tourism destinations. This includes the Niagara Falls Convention Centre and several hotels in downtown Niagara Falls.

Video inspections found significant deterioration in this trunk sewer. To address this, the Region is moving ahead with rehabilitation using the cured-in-place pipe trenchless method. This cost-effective approach extends the lifespan of the existing infrastructure. It also greatly reduces the carbon footprint compared to traditional open-trench replacement methods.

The scope of work for this project includes:

  • Rehabilitation of about 1,651 metres of 1200-millimetre and 81 metres of 1350-millimetre trunk concrete sewer
  • Rehabilitation of 13 maintenance holes by wall bond spray-applied liner system
  • Installation and operation of a temporary overland sewage bypass system
  • Landscape and asphalt restorations where needed

Construction is expected to begin in September 2025 and be mostly complete by March 2026
