About the project

Niagara Region has undertaken improvements for the Niagara Falls Wastewater Treatment Plant located at 3450 Stanley Ave. in Niagara Falls. The plant is a key asset within our wastewater infrastructure system. It serves about 107,000 residents and visitors throughout the year.

These improvements will ensure increased treatment performance, greater equipment reliability and improved ability to protect the environment by meeting provincial and federal requirements.

The project will consist of three phases.

• Phase 1: Secondary treatment upgrades

  Design of Phase 1 has been completed. Construction includes:

  • Various improvements to grit, chemical and secondary clarifier systems
  • Replacement of the existing rotating biological contactors with moving bed biofilm reactors
  • Construction of new chemical and blower buildings
  • Construction of a new chlorine contact tank and dechlorination system
  • Improvements to plant access and electrical and water supplies
• Phase 2: Primary treatment upgrades

  Design of Phase 2 has not started yet. Design details and construction timing are to be determined. This phase is expected to include:

  • Structural improvements to the primary clarifier tanks
  • Replacement of the primary clarifier sludge removal systems
• Phase 3: Raw sewage pumps and screen upgrades

  Design of Phase 3 has not started yet. Design details and construction timing are to be determined. This phase is expected to include:

  • A new raw sewage screening process
  • Upgrade to the raw sewage pumping station
