Become an operator in training

In Ontario, individuals working in regulated drinking water or wastewater systems must hold a valid operator certificate. There are two main operator categories at Niagara Region:

  • Drinking water operators - manage water treatment, distribution, or both.
  • Wastewater operators - oversee wastewater treatment or collection facilities

Certified operators handle operational checks, adjust and test processes, and control water or wastewater flow, pressure and quality.

Requirements to become an operator

  • Class G driver's licence
  • Operator in Training licences (four exams)
  • Environmental / lab diploma is considered an asset, but not a mandatory requirement
