King Street (Regional Road 81) Rehabilitation Study
All Niagara Region projects

About the project

Niagara Region is reviewing options to improve a major regional east / west corridor on King Street (Regional Road 81).

The project will extend from Nineteenth Street to Twenty-Third Street in Lincoln. The length is approximately two kilometres. The study area is located within the Niagara Escarpment Plan area. The Twenty Mile Creek Arch Bridge designates as an escarpment natural area. It is next to the Niagara Escarpment Parks and Open Space System.

Study objectives

This project will review road rehabilitation options including:

  • Addressing complete streets concepts and adding active transportation facilities
  • Options for the failing retaining wall on the street from Nineteenth Street to Brookside Drive

Both Niagara Region's Transportation Master Plan and the Town of Lincoln's Active Transportation Strategy made recommendations for better active transportation facilities along this roadway. This includes:

  • A cycling facility from Nineteenth Street to Brookside Drive
  • A proposed buffered paved shoulder west of Nineteenth Street

As part of this study, the following issues will be reviewed and addressed:

  • Traffic safety needs of the roadway. This includes improvement to sightlines, speed management and interaction between different road users.
  • Connecting existing and planned active transportation facilities
  • Meeting Regional design objectives and solutions such as a multi-use path, cycle track or sidewalk to improve safety for all road
  • Impacts to existing properties along the roadway
  • Failure of existing timber retaining wall system and new retaining wall needs
  • Natural heritage impacts
