Niagara Region initiated a Schedule C Municipal Class Environmental Assessment to assess leachate management options at the Quarry Road Landfill. The purpose of a Class Environmental Assessment process is to identify any potential environmental impacts associated with the proposed works and to plan appropriate mitigation measures.
Quarry Road Landfill was closed in 2000 and is located at the rear of 3768 Quarry Rd. in the Town of Lincoln. Due to negative water quality impacts caused by leachate-impacted groundwater being discharged to nearby Stream D, the Region installed a treatment system consisting of an aerated settling tank and constructed wetland. However, this existing system has experienced chronic issues with leakage and exceedance of environmental compliance objectives. In addition, the current rated capacity is not sufficient to capture and treat the entire plume of leachate-impacted groundwater.
This study seeks to improve the existing leachate management solution to minimize adverse environmental and property impacts while ensuring environmental compliance and improvement of downstream aquatic habitat and water quality conditions.
