Niagara Region has initiated a Schedule 'B' Municipal Class Environmental Assessment of Burleigh Hill Drive (Regional Road 56) between Glendale Avenue (Regional Road 89) and St. David's Road (Regional Road 71). Burleigh Hill Drive is an important link connecting St. Catharines and Thorold. It is the only Regional Road crossing the Niagara Escarpment in the area between Highway 406 and the Welland Canal.
The existing issues along this road include inadequate active transportation facilities, speeding concerns, poor stormwater drainage and deteriorating pavement condition. The project team will develop alternative solutions to address these issues. This is to improve conditions for transportation, adapting a complete streets approach that caters to all road users.
Consultation with the public, Indigenous Nations, regulatory agencies, and stakeholders is a key element of the Municipal Class Environmental Assessment process. There will be two Public Information Centres over the course of the study. They are an opportunity for input on potential solution and to discuss concerns and issues with the project team. Public notices are distributed in advance of each Public Information Centre, with the first one planned for early 2023.
