In celebration of National Volunteer Week, Niagara Region Senior Services hosted its annual Volunteer Appreciation Event on April 10. This year’s theme, Volunteers are Rays of Sunshine, sought to show how volunteers help bring warmth to the Region’s long-term care homes.
Volunteers are key to the overall success of the Region’s social programming and community fundraising in our long-term care homes and community programs. Currently, there are 480 volunteers enrolled in the Senior Services program and they have dedicated more than 52,000 hours of volunteer support in 2018. Moreover, in 2018 alone, our volunteer and community fundraising groups raised a total of $261,583 to benefit residents of our long-term care homes.
The event honours volunteers both new and established including Eleanor Snider. Ms. Snider has been volunteering in various capacities for her community and Senior Services for more than 50 years as a way to keep busy and give back. She received the Regional Chair’s Certificate of Recognition for her outstanding contribution.
The event was attended by Regional Councillors Barbara Greenwood, Peter Nicholson, and Pat Chiocchio along with other dignitaries.
"Volunteering is just me and I wanted to give back. I am very fortunate for all of the opportunities I have been provided throughout my life. You receive so much satisfaction by making someone’s life a little better. You build relationships with the residents and know them on a first name basis. They are always excited to see you."
~ Eleanor Snider, Senior Services Volunteer
"Our volunteers are invaluable and they leave a lasting impression on our residents and staff. They generously share their time, warmth and care. Our volunteers, through their many contributions, help to foster a vibrant and welcoming environment for all."
~ Henri Koning, Director of Senior Services
"The Niagara Region is grateful for the continued support we receive from all our volunteers in our long-term care homes. The contributions from our volunteers is much appreciated and their compassion, generosity and dedication does not go unnoticed. They are helping us build a stronger community."
