Pedestrians safer in West Lincoln with new crossovers

Niagara Region has installed a new pedestrian crossover in Smithville to enhance the safety of pedestrians in the area, including students and others walking to the newly relocated St. Martin Catholic Elementary School.

The crossover, located on Regional Road 20 at South Grimsby Road 5 is the first pedestrian crossover of its kind in Niagara and offers a number of enhanced safety features over a traditional crosswalk.  A second crossover is in the process of being installed further east on Regional Road 20 at Wade Road.

The crossovers have specific pavement markings and crossing signs with pedestrian activated rapid flashing lights, to alert motorists to pedestrians. They are designed to provide the same level of safety for pedestrians as traffic signal controlled intersections.

Under the law, drivers and cyclists must stop and yield to pedestrians at crossovers until they completely finish crossing. Failure to do so will result in fines ranging from $150 to $500 and up to three demerit points.

"The health and well-being of our citizens are a top priority for me and all members of Regional Council. The new pedestrian crossovers in West Lincoln demonstrate our commitment to public safety and to continually improving the safety of our roadways for pedestrians, cyclists and drivers."
~ Alan Caslin, Regional Chair
"The new crossovers are an important contribution to the safety of our citizens, particularly those travelling to and from St. Martin Catholic Elementary School. On behalf of the West Lincoln Council, I thank Niagara Region for this important contribution to the safety of our residents and our community. "
~ Douglas Joyner, Mayor of West Lincoln
"The installation of these pedestrian crossovers by the Region of Niagara will have a significant positive impact on both student and pedestrian safety. The Niagara Regional Police Service and its community safety partners are committed to road safety through engineering, education and enforcement."
~ Rom Di Egidio, Staff Sergeant, NRPS
