St. Paul West Street Bridge lane reduction and load restrictions

Beginning Wednesday, Dec. 21, the St. Paul West Street Bridge in St. Catharines will be reduced to one lane. The bridge will remain open to vehicle and pedestrian traffic.

Recent bridge inspections revealed increased deterioration of the existing bridge. By reducing traffic to one lane, Niagara Region can extend the life of the bridge and ensure that the bridge remains open for vehicle and pedestrian traffic while lessening the negative impacts of heavy vehicle loads on the bridge. The bridge remains safe for vehicle and pedestrian use.

While St. Paul Street between Pelham Road and Louth Street will remain open, a detour will be put in place including the following roads:
  • Pelham Road to Louth Street
  • Great Western Street will be temporarily converted to one-way traffic northbound
A temporary traffic signal will be placed on both the east and west sides of the bridge to allow for a smooth transition to a single lane of traffic on the bridge. All businesses in the affected area remain open. Load restrictions will be put in place for this bridge and all trucks (with the exception of emergency vehicles) must use the posted detour route.

The St. Paul West Street Bridge is scheduled for replacement in 2023, with construction activities anticipated to begin in the spring of 2023. The detour will remain in place until the construction of the new bridge is complete.

Niagara Region regularly inspects all bridges and transportation infrastructure in the region to ensure they remain in sound physical condition. When deterioration or infrastructure concerns are identified actions are taken to ensure the continued safe use of the infrastructure until full replacements or repairs can be made.

Details of the detour and further updates on the bridge status and construction updates will be provided as required on the Region’s website at niagararegion.ca and on the Region’s social media channels.
