Niagara Region celebrates National Housing Day

Nov. 22 marks National Housing Day in Canada, which aims to raise awareness on homelessness and the unwavering commitment by government and community partners to tackle this issue.
Currently there are more than 10,000 households on the Region’s wait list and 24,000 households in core housing need waiting for safe, suitable, affordable housing in Niagara.
On this National Housing Day, Niagara Region Housing Services recognizes that more work needs to be done to address the housing and homelessness crisis locally.
However, over the last number of years, Niagara Region and Niagara Regional Housing have taken important steps to build more affordable accommodations and ensure program supports are available to those who need them.
Niagara now has a Consolidated Housing Master Plan, which is a comprehensive study of existing assets and significant development capacity and provides a blueprint for the development of new affordable housing units until 2045. Also, 73 units and more than 800 affordable housing units are now underway, at various stages of development across Niagara.
Housing Services is a partner in a broader Affordable Housing Strategy that advances the collective effort of critical municipal partners, including those managing incentive programs, planning, local area municipalities and housing teams.
Today, Niagara Region Housing Services joins with other municipalities and partner agencies across Ontario in emphasizing the need for housing in our communities.

"Working closely together, we can move forward quickly to get as many shovels in the ground as quickly as possible so that more people can have an affordable and safe place to call home."
~ Adrienne Jugley, Commissioner of Community Services
"The economic impact of the Covid-19 pandemic was devastating to low-income communities. And then the housing crisis dashed many tenants’ hope of moving into the private market. But we are seeing light at the end of the tunnel - and we’re laser-focussed on solutions."
~ Donna Woiceshyn, Regional Director of Housing Services and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Niagara Regional Housing
