Community groups can Adopt-A-Road and help keep their community clean

Niagara Region’s Adopt-a-Road program is looking to partner with volunteer groups and organizations who want to help beautify their community and pick up litter along Regional road rights-of-way. The program has been in place in Niagara and other communities for many years with local service clubs, schools, youth groups, neighbourhood and business associations, businesses and others wishing to participate.

Adopt-a-Road is a way for citizens, community and civic organizations, private businesses, and industry to contribute to making roads in Niagara more clean and beautiful. The program creates a cleaner, healthier environment and encourages community spirit and pride with people taking an active role in their community.

People looking for more information, or who want to Adopt-a-Road in their community, can start with a visit to the Adopt-a-Road webpage on Niagara Region’s website.

Once on the Adopt-a-Road webpage, complete the application as it shows what roads in your community are available for adoption. A Regional program coordinator will be in touch with the contact person to confirm the section of Regional road and help get them started.

Volunteer citizens and organizations participating in the program will enter into an agreement with Niagara Region to adopt a section of a Niagara Regional road right-of-way in accordance with the terms and conditions.

Health and safety standards are in place to help ensure the safety of volunteers while beautifying an area. Niagara Region will provide safety vests, roadwork signs, trash bags, safety information and training, flags and traffic cones. Regional staff will work with volunteers to coordinate the removal and disposal of filled trash bags and / or hazardous waste.

In recognition of their support for the program, Niagara Region will place a sign with the name of the group or organization, acknowledging their efforts as outlined in the terms and conditions.
