Niagara EMS names Karen Lutz, Deputy Chief
Chief Kevin Smith is excited to announce that commander Karen Lutz-Graul has been named Deputy Chief for Niagara Emergency Medical Services.
Commander Lutz-Graul has been a member of Niagara EMS since inception in 2000 and prior to that worked for the Niagara-on-the-Lake Ambulance Service from 1991. Karen received her Advanced Care Paramedic certification in 2001 and assumed the role of Superintendent of Quality Assurance and Training in 2009 and was later promoted to Commander of System Performance in 2013. Most recently Karen led the Niagara EMS System Transformation Project and played a key role in the development of our Mobile Integrated Health teams.
Commander Lutz-Graul was instrumental on the recent Accredited Centre of Excellence recognition for the services newest Emergency Communications Nurse System – only the 4th in the world. Karen has also been involved in the development of the Niagara Ontario Health Team (N-OHT) and has established significant relationships and partnerships with many local organizations and agencies to advance integrated healthcare for Niagara.
In addition to other professional accomplishments, Karen received her Bachelor of Science Clinical Practice (Paramedic) from Charles Stuart University in 2011.
In a letter to the chief in her application, Commander Lutz-Graul stated that “The people that work for this organization are the heart and soul of this organization and their dedication to their work is a true testament to the amazing staff we have working at Niagara EMS.” The chief couldn’t agree more with this assertion making Karen “a perfect fit for the executive leadership team and the new Deputy Chief for Niagara EMS.”
Karen Lutz-Graul becomes the first female deputy chief for Niagara EMS and will be replacing current deputy chief Roger Mayo who is retiring September 30. Karen will be working with deputy chief Rick Ferron and chief Kevin Smith as the executive leadership team for Niagara EMS.
