Epididymitis/PID Treatment Guide for Doctors

Recommended Regimens

  • Doxycycline 100 mg PO bid for 10-14 days and ceftriaxone 250 mg IM in a single dose.

Second line treatment (use only if first line treatment is not available)

  • +/- Metronidazole 500 mg BID for 14 days for anaerobic coverage for PID

Penicillin Allergy

Same as recommended treatment regimen, except the use of cephalosporins is contraindicated in persons with an IgE mediated penicillin allergy (e.g. anaphylaxis, Steven Johnson’s syndrome).

  • 2 g Azithromycin PO in a single dose


Retest post treatment if compliance is uncertain or if alternative treatment is used.
