Summary


Niagara Region currently has openings for temporary, full-time Summer Students in our Public Works Department.

Multiple positions are available from May 6- August 31 in our Water & Wastewater, Transportation, and Waste Management Divisions.

In order to qualify, applicants must be starting or returning to full-time, post-secondary studies in September 2019 - please review the posting for all requirements.



Our summer students work in a wide variety of areas, including
  • Grass cutting/lawn maintenance
  • Landscaping/gardening
  • Tree planting, pruning, and tree/brush removal
  • Painting
  • Cleaning
  • Deliveries & stocking
  • Filing/organizing of records (written and electronic)
  • Keeping logs (written and/or electronic)
  • Data entry
  • Assisting with traffic/pedestrian signal maintenance, cleaning and testing
  • Graffiti and poster removal
  • Traffic control (ex.flagging) at work sites
  • General assembly (ex.shelving)
  • General labour (indoor and outdoor)Hours of work: All positions are scheduled 40 hours per week.

    Shifts vary depending on the position, however, most positions start between 7:00am and 8:00am daily, Monday to Friday.

    Some positions start at 6:45am.

    Student(s) assigned to work at our Landfills work Tuesday to Saturday.


Location & Travel Locations vary throughout the Niagara Region, including Landfills, Water/Wastewater Treatment plants, field sites, etc.

Some positions require working outdoors (including in inclement weather) and considerable travel between work sites during the day throughout Niagara.

All positions require the student to have a reliable mode of transportation to work, and a valid G2 driver's license (at a minimum).

Most positions require a valid and restriction-free G class driver's license, which is strongly preferred.

Some positions require students to have access to a reliable vehicle for travel to various work locations throughout the day.


Physical Demands The positions require the ability to perform physical activities such as walking, lifting, bending, twisting, climbing, crouching, sitting/standing for long periods, etc.

(degree varies depending on the position).Assets include previous experience (including volunteer and co-op experience), training, education/courses and skills in the following areas (depending on the position):
  • Landscaping and/or lawn care in a commercial, park, golf course or farm setting (or similar)
  • Use of push mowers and other small lawn maintenance equipment (ex.

    weed trimmers)
  • Use of riding lawn mowers, large tractors with under carriage mower decks or other similar heavier lawn maintenance equipment
  • Driving a (pick-up) truck that is towing a trailer
  • Use of hand tools
  • Use of machinery
  • Painting, cleaning, and other general labour duties
  • Tree planting, trimming, pruning, etc.

  • Construction
  • Traffic control (ex.

    flagging) at work sites
  • Working with traffic signals or similar devices
  • Filing and organizing records, including data entry
  • Health & Safety-related training, such as WHMIS and CPR/First Aid
  • Driver safety training or similar
  • Stockroom or warehouse

Education

  • Completion of an high school diploma or equivalency (ex. GED) is required
  • Must be enrolled in/returning to full-time post-secondary studies in September 2019 (upon completion of summer employment)

Skills

  • In addition to the below, please see the list of Assets provided under the Job Summary section
  • Customer service skills
  • Ability to work as part of a team, as well as self-directed and/or with minimal supervision
  • Strong health & safety orientation
  • Computer skills (email, internet, word processing, etc.)

Special Requirements

  • Must be able to start full-time work no later than May 6, 2019 (all positions)
  • Must be able to work the hours and duration of work outlined in the posting
  • Must be enrolled in/returning to full-time post-secondary studies in September 2019 (upon completion of summer employment)
  • It is the employee's responsibility to possess and maintain a valid and restriction-free driver's license of appropriate class to carry out the duties of the job.
  • A valid G2-class driver's license is required (at a minimum) most positions require a valid and restriction-free G class license, which is strongly preferred
  • Access to a reliable vehicle for travel to various work locations throughout the day (some positions)
  • In accordance with the Corporate Criminal Record Check Policy, some positions require the incumbent to undergo a Criminal Records Check and submit a Canadian Police Clearance Certificate
  • Satisfactory Driver's Abstract (some positions)
  • Providing your own CSA Approved Safety Footwear (some positions)
