Business Licensing for Salvage Yards and Shops
A salvage business can be a yard or shop where salvage is received, collected, sorted, processed, handled, dismantled, crushed, recycled, demolished, displayed, stored, sold or purchased, and includes automobile wrecking yards.
By-law No. 2021-59 licences, regulates and governs salvage shops and salvage yards within Niagara.
Licence application or renewal
Apply online for a business licence or renewal. Renewals must be submitted at least 30 days before the licence expires.

Licence requirements
- If the applicant is a corporation, all current articles of incorporation for the corporation
- All current legal documents showing the registered business name of the applicant, if applicable
- The full legal names and signatures of all persons having signing authority for the applicant corporation, if applicable. This includes a letter outlining the number of signatures required for financial and administrative functions.
- Certificate of Insurance confirming Commercial General Liability in the amount of $2 million and naming Niagara Region as insured
- Correspondence from the applicable area municipality confirming zoning approval

Licence requirements
- If the applicant is a corporation, all current articles of incorporation for the corporation
- All current legal documents showing the registered business name of the applicant, if applicable
- The full legal names and signatures of all persons having signing authority for the applicant corporation, if applicable. This includes a letter outlining the number of signatures required for financial and administrative functions.
- Certificate of Insurance confirming Commercial General Liability in the amount of $5 million liability and naming Niagara Region as insured
- Confirmation that the yard is in compliance with all applicable environmental regulations and standards set by the Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks
- Correspondence from the applicable area municipality confirming zoning approval
- Annual fire inspection report within two months
- A letter from Niagara Region's Planning and Development department confirming the yard's location conforms to the Official Plan
- Letter from the Niagara Escarpment Commission confirming the operation does not violate the Niagara Escarpment Plan
- A site plan that shows legal boundaries of yard, location of buildings and location of fence
