NRPS 1 District Police Station

Excavation site work has begun at 198 Welland Ave. as part of the NRPS 1 District project. The excavation work will last approximately 10 weeks and includes:

  • Installation of a temporary security fence
  • Clearing of the entire site
  • Demolition of the existing garage building
  • Removal of existing foundations found on the site
  • Removal of contaminated soils
  • Examining the soil for items of archaeological significance

The contractor, Peter’s Excavation, will be conducting this work on behalf of Niagara Region. Construction of the new building is expected to begin in 2016.

Archaeological work is now complete on the site and no burial remains were found.

The archaeologists found artifacts of historical significance in 12 different areas on the site.

These items range in date from the 1830s to the early 1900s and include items like tablewares, domestic items and glass jars / bottles.

All artifacts recovered from the site will undergo detailed laboratory analysis and will be documented in reports. The materials will be stored for safekeeping until a permanent home can be established.
