Notice of study commencement for Smithville gravity sewer Environmental Assessment in Grimsby

Niagara Region has started a Municipal Class Environmental Assessment to identify the preferred Smithville sewer alignment to carry flows from the Smithville sewage pumping station forcemain to the Grimsby (Baker Road) Wastewater Treatment Plant.

This study will also review the capacity and sizing needed for the proposed Smithville sewer to support growth in West Lincoln and Grimsby.

This study is being completed as a Schedule ‘B’ Class Environmental Assessment. It meets Phases 1 and 2 of the Municipal Engineers Association Municipal Class Environmental Assessment process, a planning process approved under Ontario’s Environmental Assessment Act.

This study will define the problems and opportunities, develop and evaluate alternative solutions, identify a preferred solution and look at ways to avoid or minimize impacts to the community and natural environment.

Niagara Region encourages the public and stakeholders to participate in this planning process. A Public Information Centre will be planned for later in 2026. It will present details about the study, the options being considered and will provide an opportunity to share comments and concerns.

Upon completion of the study, a Project File Report documenting the study process will be prepared and made available for public review and comment.

Comments are welcome throughout the project and will be considered and documented.
