Notice of Public Information Centre #1 for Grimsby Trunk Watermain Environmental Assessment

Niagara Region is undertaking an Environmental Assessment for a new trunk watermain to carry drinking water from the Grimsby Water Treatment Plant near Lake Ontario to the Park Ridge Reservoir along Park Street at the top of the Niagara Escarpment.

The new trunk watermain is needed to support future growth. It will help the water system run more efficiently while meeting new capacity and future flow needs.

Process

This study is being completed as a Schedule 'B' Class Environmental Assessment and meets Phases 1 and 2 of the Municipal Engineers Association Municipal Class Environmental Assessment process. The study examined various crossing locations along the Niagara Escarpment and alignment routes throughout Grimsby.

After a detailed review of the alignment options, a preferred alignment was identified. It runs along the North Service Road, crosses under the QEW and CN Rail using trenchless construction, continues along Murray Street, crosses under 40 Mile Creek using trenchless construction, then follows Elm Street, Mountain Street, Elm Tree Road and Park Road to the Park Ridge Reservoir. This alignment is recommended because it reduces impacts to the environment and the community and is more cost-efficient than the other options.
