Odour concerns from the Port Weller Wastewater Treatment Plant
Niagara Region is currently experiencing a temporary mechanical failure at the Port Weller wastewater treatment facility, which has resulted in stronger than usual odours in nearby areas. While some odour is expected near facilities like this, the current situation is outside of normal levels, and we understand the disruption it’s causing to residents.
We want to reassure the community that the smell, while unpleasant, does not pose a health risk. Our monitoring systems remain active and compliant with all health and environmental safety standards. Sewage is being treated as it normally would.
Niagara Region is doing everything we can to accelerate repairs and minimize the impact while replacement parts arrive and repairs are completed. In the meantime, staff are working on potential odour mitigation measures to minimize the odour issues.
We’re working urgently to resolve the immediate issue, but it’s too soon to give a precise timeline and will provide an update when one is available.
We understand how frustrating this is and we appreciate the community’s patience as we work through the repair process. It is important to note that with older facilities, such as the Port Weller Wastewater Treatment Plant, parts are often quite difficult to source and at times need to be custom manufactured. This can add significant time to make necessary repairs.
The equipment failure stems from aging infrastructure that needs replacement. Niagara, like many municipalities, has aging assets across the region. Long-term investment is already underway to modernize and strengthen the plant’s systems, and our teams are focused on both immediate repairs and long-term solutions to reduce future disruptions.
It is also important to note that unpleasant odours often emanate from the sewage collection systems and sewers during extended dry weather periods, which the area has been experiencing over the past several weeks.
We appreciate residents bringing their concerns to us, and rest assured that we are working to correct the issue.
