Statement from Regional Chair Jim Bradley regarding recent social media comments
“I would like to take a moment to address the many comments and concerns that I have heard from residents in our community and from Regional Councillors regarding a recent social media post by Councillor Bateman.
I would like to make it clear that the views expressed in that post do not represent those of Regional Council. Council strictly condemns any form of political violence, which has no place in a democracy, and expresses sorrow over the death of anyone in our society.
Those serving in public office do so with the knowledge that their words can have a profound effect on our community. In keeping with Council’s Code of Conduct, it is my expectation that all members of Regional Council conduct themselves by showing respect and dignity for all people, regardless of their views or beliefs.
While the events referenced in Councillor Bateman’s post have certainly elicited strong feelings among many, I would ask everyone in our community to strive for civility and understanding in public dialogue, treating each other with kindness and empathy at all times.
Finally, it is my hope that we, as Regional Council, can remain focused on the pressing work of the Region as it provides the programs and services that our residents and businesses rely on every day.”
