Notice of commencement: Steele Street Sewage Pumping Station / West Port Colborne Gravity Main Environmental Assessment
Niagara Region is carrying out a Municipal Class Environmental Assessment under the Environmental Assessment Act. The study will look at the possibility of building a new large sewer trunk and sewage pumping station in Port Colborne. The goal is to improve how wastewater is sent to the Port Colborne (Seaway) Wastewater Treatment Plant.
The study will review five sewer catchment areas west of the Welland Canal: Elm, Arena, Union, Omer and Steele. The aim is to find a long-term solution that could allow the Region to retire several existing sewage pumping stations. It could also reduce maintenance and eliminate sewer surcharges from station issues.
Your input is important
Niagara Region will seek feedback from the public and relevant agencies throughout the study. Information about upcoming public meetings will be shared as the study continues. Once the study is complete, a Project File Report will be available for public review for at least 30 days. The report will summarize the planning and consultation process and the preferred solution. Comments received during the study will be included in the report.
