​​​Niagara Region events for Waste Reduction Week Oct. 21-26

In celebration of Waste Reduction Week, we're hosting events Oct. 21-26. Activities include waste management facility tours and a sports equipment swap.
 
Walker Industries Compost Facility Tour
Tuesday, Oct. 22, noon to 2 p.m.
 
Join us for a guided bus tour of Walker Industries Compost Facility and Renewable Natural Gas Facility. Learn step-by-step how your Green Bin material is turned into high-quality compost. Also, learn about other interesting projects going on at Walker’s Niagara campus.
  • Tour begins at Regional Headquarters, Campbell West entrance at 1815 Sir Isaac Brock Way, Thorold
  • Participants will be taken by bus to the tour locations
  • Participants must reserve their space by emailing amber.schmucker@niagararegion.ca

Humberstone Landfill and Glenridge Naturalization Site Tour
Wednesday, Oct. 23, 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
 
Our staff will guide you through the life cycle of a landfill. The first stop at Humberstone Landfill will teach participants about what happens to their garbage once it leaves the curb. Participants will also get a visit from a special guest, Cookie the Hawk, the landfill pest control.
 
The second stop will be at the Glenridge Naturalization Site, a former landfill site turned walking trail system. Participants will learn about the full life span of a landfill and the importance of managing waste properly.

Sports Equipment Swap
Saturday, Oct. 26, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
 
Firemen's Park, 2275 Dorchester Rd., Niagara Falls (inside the Stamford Centre Volunteer Firemen’s Association building)
 
Bring your gently used sports equipment to swap it for something new (to you). Sports equipment swap events support a circular economy and reduce waste going to the landfill.
 
To donate equipment before the event, visit our Waste Info Booth at these locations:
  • Fleming Centre, 5020 Serena Dr., Beamsville on Oct. 15, 5-7 p.m.
  • West Lincoln Community Centre, 117 West St., Smithville on Oct. 16, 5-7 p.m.
  • Seymour-Hannah Sports and Entertainment Centre, 240 St. Paul St. W, St. Catharines on Oct. 17, 5-7 p.m.
  • Canada Games Park, 2021 Canada Games Way, Thorold on Oct. 23, 5-7 p.m. Donation bin available Oct. 15-25 during operating hours.
  • Lincoln Town Hall, 4800 South Service Rd., Beamsville. Donation bin available Oct. 15-25 during operating hours.
Participants who make a sports equipment donation either on the event day or during one of our donation drives will get a voucher for admission into the Sports Equipment Swap event.
