Celebrate Compost Awareness Week with Niagara Region

Niagara Region is providing compost for a donation of food or cash from May 6 – 11, 2024.

This event is in celebration of International Compost Awareness Week, an annual initiative hosted by the Compost Research and Education Foundation, aimed at educating the public on the importance of recycling organic materials and composting.

While quantities last, Niagara residents can pick up 20 litre bags of compost (limit of three bags per household) at the following locations:

  • Niagara Road 12 Landfill, West Lincoln
  • Humberstone Landfill, Welland
  • Firemens Park, Niagara Falls
  • Stevensville Conservation Area, Fort Erie

Residents will be required to load the compost into their own vehicle. In exchange for the compost, residents are asked to donate non-perishable food items or cash in support of these local charities:

Did you know that organic waste placed in the Green Bin for curbside collection is recycled into a compost? The Green Bin is an important tool for keeping food and other organic waste out of the landfills. Green Bins are picked up weekly, there is no limit, and it reduces the number of garbage bags you need to place at the curb.
