Niagara Region is working to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and prepare for potential climate change.
Niagara Region is a member of the Federation of Canadian Municipalities Partners for Climate Protection Program and has committed to:
| Milestone | Steps |
|---|---|
| September 2010 | Greenhouse Gas Emissions Inventory completed and approved by Council |
| 2010-2011 | Setting targets and creating an action plan for emissions reductions |
| 2011 & beyond | Carry out action plan, track progress and report results |
Next steps will involve community consultation to set a reduction target and to develop an action plan with involvement from community stakeholders.
Email Curt Benson if you'd like to be involved with this plan.
The Niagara Region is partnering with Environment Canada and Brock University to examine how climate change might impact the community. This process requires the consideration of three main questions:
What does Niagara's climate look like in 2050? (temperature and precipitation patterns, nature and frequency of major storms)
What type of impact will future climate changes have on our community? (human health, infrastructure, ecosystems, water resources, transportation/navigation, and energy)
How can we respond to ensure our long-range plans can account for some of these changes?
